Combining, One Level Up
Everything in Part II so far has happened at one level: you took chunks and built a module. But you saw in Part I that there is no ceiling. The module you just built is itself a part, ready to become one component of something larger. This chapter is about combining at that higher altitude, taking modules you already have and composing them into bigger modules, and then composing those into bigger ones still.
The good news is that it is the same move. Combining modules into a course is not a new skill; it is the skill from Chapter 5 applied one rung up. You select the modules that belong together, give the larger assembly one job, settle their order, and write the connective tissue between them. What changes is only the size of the pieces. Where you once arranged chunks into a lesson, you now arrange lessons into a course. The ladder is climbed with the same legs the whole way up.
Stack your modules. Just never weld them, or you can never pull one back out.
How a Stack Actually Forms
Watch it happen with the course. You have built several lesson modules: budgeting, debt, compound interest, investing basics. Each is whole and clean. Now you compose them. You decide which belong in this particular course and in what order, and you write the brief connective tissue that carries a learner from one to the next. The result is a course, and the course is itself a module, a single larger whole that does one larger job. It can now be composed in turn: this course plus two others becomes a certification program, which is a module at a higher level again.
You can see the same stack everywhere once you look. A single slide can act as a chunk at the deck level; a section of slides is a module; the deck is a larger module; the deck joins others to make a course. A musical phrase builds into a movement; movements compose into a symphony; symphonies sit in a composer’s catalog. A scene builds into an episode; episodes into a season; seasons into a series. In every case, complete pieces at one level become the parts of a complete piece at the next. That is all a hierarchy is: combining, repeated, up the rungs.

Promotion in Practice
Chapter 3 named the move that makes this work: promotion, the moment a finished whole becomes a single part of something larger. Here is what it looks like in the doing.
When you drop the compound-interest lesson into the course, you are not breaking it open and re-using its chunks one at a time. You are taking the whole lesson, intact, and treating it as a single item in the course’s outline. At the level of the course, that entire lesson is now one part, one line, the way a chunk was one part of the lesson. You stop seeing its internals and start seeing it as a unit. This is the quiet efficiency of working in modules: when you assemble the course, you are arranging four or five whole lessons, not forty loose chunks. The lesson did the work of bundling its chunks once, and now it carries them around as a set, so you never have to handle them individually again. Each level of promotion shrinks what you have to think about, because the level below has already been packed into wholes.
That is also why building clean pays off more the higher you go. A lesson with tangled edges might still limp along inside the one course it was born in. But try to promote it, drop it into a second course, fold it into a program, and every dependency it carries becomes a crack. Promotion only works on pieces that were built whole, and the more levels you intend to climb, the more that matters.
Keep the Nested Pieces Independent
Now the one discipline that this chapter exists to teach, the thing that keeps a deep stack from seizing up. Nested modules must stay independent enough to be pulled back out.
Here is the danger. When a module sits inside a larger module for a while, it is tempting to let it lean on its neighbors. The investing lesson sits right after the compound-interest lesson in this course, so you trim the investing lesson’s setup and let it assume the learner just came from compounding. It reads smoothly in this course. But you have just welded the two lessons together. The investing lesson can no longer be pulled out on its own, because out of this course it is missing a foundation it quietly borrowed from its neighbor. A stack built this way looks fine from the outside and is secretly fused solid. Try to lift any one piece and the whole thing comes with it, or tears.
Independence is the cure, and it is a discipline you apply at every level. Each nested module should still carry its own ground, make its own setup, and stand on its own, even while it sits comfortably inside something larger. The test is the one from Chapter 6, asked of every piece in the stack: if I lifted this module out of its container right now, would it still work on its own? When the answer is yes all the way down, the hierarchy stays alive. You can pull the compound-interest lesson out of this course and drop it into another. You can pull a whole course out of the program and run it standalone. The stack is composed, not fused, and composed things can always be taken apart and recomposed differently. That is the entire freedom you are building toward.
Connection Without Dependency
This raises a fair objection. If every module has to stand alone, do you lose the flow between them? A course where each lesson rigidly re-introduces everything would be repetitive and stiff. The resolution is a distinction worth holding onto: connect modules, but do not make them depend on each other.
Connection is added at the join and belongs to the whole; dependency is baked into the part and traps it.
Connection is the light bridge you write at the seam, the transition that acknowledges what came before and eases into what comes next. It lives in the container, in the course, as part of how the course arranges its lessons. Dependency is when the module itself, on the inside, cannot function without its neighbor. The fix is to put the joining in the connective tissue of the larger module, not inside the smaller ones. The course can say, in its own transition, “having seen how compounding works, we can now look at where to put your money,” and that bridge makes the course flow. But the investing lesson, on the inside, still carries enough of its own footing to teach even if that bridge were removed. Connection is added at the join and belongs to the whole; dependency is baked into the part and traps it. Keep the joining at the level above, and your pieces flow together without being chained together. The rule of nested modules is connection without dependency: the larger whole makes the pieces flow together, but the smaller pieces never need their neighbors to work.
When Independence Pays Off
The reward for this discipline is invisible right up until the moment it saves you, so it is worth seeing once. You built the finance course with the compound-interest lesson kept independent, carrying its own setup, joined to its neighbors only by bridges that live in the course. For months that independence does nothing visible; the lesson just sits there working, and a fused version would have looked exactly as good.
Then a new opportunity arrives: a course on planning for retirement. It needs compounding too, of course it does. Because your lesson was kept independent, this costs you almost nothing. You pull the whole lesson out of the finance course, drop it into the retirement course, write one new bridge at the new seam, and you are done. The lesson works immediately, because it never depended on the budgeting lesson that used to precede it. Now imagine you had welded it instead, trimmed its setup because compounding always followed budgeting. Dropping it into the retirement course, it would open mid-thought, leaning on a foundation that is no longer there, and you would be rebuilding the very thing you thought you had saved. Same lesson, same library. The only difference is that one version was built to be pulled out and the other was not, and you do not find out which you built until the day you reach for it.
What Comes Next
That completes Part II. You can build a module from chunks, judge whether it is good, decide whether it is worth keeping, and now compose modules into larger modules up as many levels as you like, promoting whole pieces into parts while keeping every piece independent enough to pull back out. You have the entire combining move, top to bottom.
So far, every use of a module has meant placing it into some assembly, building upward. But that is only the first of the three moves. A module you have built once can also be delivered in many different forms without being rebuilt at all, the same lesson as a talk, a video, a handout, a chapter. That is repackaging, the sideways move, and it is where a single well-built module starts to pay you back many times over. Part III begins there.
